I disagree with the preloader changes that you have bundled in with this.

1) We really should try to not bundle random changes in with other bug fixes

2) I think the default preloader makes app loading both psychologically look
slower (I associate progress notifications with slow apps) and technically
slower (because it is wasting CPU that my app could use).
