right now the runtime sets visible to false when opacity goes to 0. this
was to fix a bug in the flashplayer where opacity 0 things
a) are ghosted and
b) (worse) still get rendered -- meaning that a complex view which is
opacity 0 will have detrimental performance effects.

When I fixed the opacity/visible bug, I made it so that the runtime
reports the visible state as false when opacity goes to 0 mostly because I
was lazy. this was pretty obviously a mistake; the runtime should be able
to set the visible of the movieclip to false without representing it as
such. that's just extra work. I'm pretty sure that Oliver filed a bug on
this.

The simplelayout behavior that you're seeing is a result of the fact that
simplelayout (i think correctly) ignores views which are visible=false.
