I brought it up about a month ago, thinking it was, but was told that

position() is operating as expected, and there seemed to be

implication that the bug was more in the Debugger error instructing:

getNodeOffset() is deprecated - use xpath 'position()' instead.

Relevant existing Open bugs here are:

position() operator not working correctly for ranged nodes: datapath="rank[3]/position()" always returns 1

LzDatapointer should expose getPosition() to determine position of node in array

LPP-301 was filed by Max Carlson, who wrote a lot of this code, so extrapolating from just these two bugs, perhaps position() does work in the general case, but there's a bug when it is used for ranged nodes.

We should get at least  LPP-301 fixed. I've added it to the 'Contribute' pseudo-release to raise its visiblity.
