There are two answers to this question. The first is to use the pattern implemented in laszlo-explorer/explore-nav.lzx, in the menubutton class. This pattern uses two separate techniques to handle the single-node and multi-node cases, but sends a single event for either.

The second answer is that there is a proposal extant to make replication much more explicit in the language. This would also unify the single/multi-node match scenarios. See http://wiki.openlaszlo.org/ Explicit_Replication.
