Thanks for your response, Henry. One remaining question. Is the <import> tag only available in proxied (non-SOLO) apps? I can see that to use the import tag, we point it at an LZX file, which I imagine would need to be compiled - and thus, the question. :)

It is done with a nasty Flash trick, the loadable library exports its own assets, and then imports them. Fonts, being global resources, end up imported into the parent application global font namespace.
