It's possible to create the same effect in some browsers by applying SVG masks. The HTML example is using SVG/CSS attributes, but it should be possible to add that feature to the DHTML runtime. Not sure how much work that would be, and it would only work in Firefox, Safari, Webkit and probably Opera 10.5.
