What was the setup that caused the error? I can try to see if I can
make the LZX back end recognize some specific error messages that get
output from the flex compiler, and suggest some solution to the user.

One way that you can always check is to run the flex compile manually; the
lzx compiler prints out a command line that you can cut and paste into a
shell
and it executes the same command that it runs internally. Then you will see
the original error messages unfiltered by the LZX compiler.
