Sorry, for the delay ... I wanted to check out a few of the things pointed out
in your email and Bob Daley's followup. I have produced a cut-down version and
put all the relevant files at URL:

     http://maths.uwa.edu.au/~gregg/l2htest/

The page there describes what I did to test things and the success and lack thereof
of my attempts. I installed l2h98_1p5 to see if things were any better. I still
have no figure numbers when captions contain maths.

Indeed ... I had not realised that I should set these switches, and
yes ... setting these switches causes L2H to translate `align', `align*', `gather',
`gather*' beautifully ... but alas, now the formulae involving \smgt and
\scdot are awry, because it doesn't pass these straight to LaTeX etc. to
be processed as images, apparently. What should I do to fix this? ...
clearly using: -no_math -html_version 3.2,math
is better than my \DIV ... \endDIV kludge. (Again check the above URL
for my experiment.)

I'm now running l2h98_1p5 on a much larger file to see if any other new
problems have eventuated. I'll let you know what happens.

In fact, when I used the switches: -no_math -html_version 3.2,math
with l2h98_1p1 *all* my maths symbols disappeared. It would seem that
with these switches there is no point in persevering with l2h98_1p1
- an upgrade is mandatory.

Regards and thanks for your help,
  Greg Gamble
