Hi,
try the following little file in latex2html version 98.1,
command
 latex2html -html_version 3.2,math -no_math file

\documentclass{article}
\newenvironment{env}{a}%
{b}

\begin{document}
$\mathcal{ALC}$
\end{document}

What happens is that the comment character %
causes the picture generated for $\mathcal{ALC}$
to become the {b}.

If the comment character is removed, all is fine.
The processing of the comment character is quite involved.
I solved this problem by changing
 s/^([ \t]*%.*)\n/p  ...  to
 s/([ \t]*%.*)\n/p
in line 1248,
but I am not sure whether this is intended.

Second problem
**************

$\mathcal ABC$ and $\cal ABC$
change the font in LaTeX . But they are treated like macros by
latex2html.
That means $\mathcal ABC$ is treated like $\mathcal{A}BC$,
which is not what is intended.

I cannot check all the files and put braces around the arguments.
Is there another way around this?

All the best
