this is strange even in LaTeX2.09:
try to replace this by:

        \newcommand{\bno}{{\bf no}}
                      ^^^^^^^^

Even better: switch to LeTeX2e and type

        \newcommand{\bno}{\textbf{no}}

This should be easier to interprete for l2h.
