Speaking of commercial products ... I purchased Textures 2.0 earlier this
year.  I'd recommend it over any public domain LaTeX package.  It has
definitely been worth the hefty purchase price for the construction of
a book and journal articles.

On the other hand, last year I cranked out a 400-page technical report
with multiple authors in MS Word.  No complaints about that package
either.

To complement Urban below, choose your tool based on need and not on
software religion.
