I was thinking along similar lines, I just wonder why we do it the
way, it is done right now. From a layout and usability point of view
it seems an awkward solution (IMHO;-) -- but maybe I'm missing a point
here?

BTW, if you directly link to a document like:

        http://www.erdw.ethz.ch/~bonk/test/spoc.html

you will realize that in addition to the frames which should be
visible, index.html is displayed too at the very bottom of the
page. Furthermore, the index frame will be there, for any subsequent
node which is loaded. For an example, see the above address.
