the latest version of comment.sty, on ctan, is a terrible bore -- it
reads and writes files all over the place, and so gobbles up pool
space in tex as well as producing all these tedious bits of extra log
output.  it appeared shortly after i produced my hack to make
something _i_ needed work -- sometime in latex 1997 or early 1998.
