Is that what the black markings are for? A sizing box? If not...
reducing ambiguity is good. I don't know enough about TeX (yet, i'm
reading) to put one around it just so you want it to give pnmcrop
a target.

I thought they were some wierd artifact of the image conversion that
needed kludging around?
