Thanks for that, we have spent a while converting site(s) to XHTML, but I
have begun to wonder: "Why?" !

Try "tidy" by David Raggett (www.w3c.org/People/Raggett/tidy ... I think)
which does nice conversions of HTML to XHTML ("tidy -asxhtml" from the
command line), including batch conversions (also warning on accessibility
issues: missing "alt='image description'", etc.).
It does some encoding work as well, but from my experience encoding then
remains as the major bugbear! (Anyone noted any major progress on UTF-8??)
