I'm having the same problem, Christian, on Red Hat Linux 8.0. I've upgraded to the latest version of netpbm (10.13), to no avail. I'm using perl 5.8.0, but I tried an older version (5.004) that I had lying around --- again with no success.

Any suggestions out there?

since I updated perl to v5.6.1 built for irix-n32,
latex2html-2002-2-1 generates in *some* cases inlined images without
cropping the bottom black bar. I can't revert to perl 1994.
My Ghostscript version is 7.04 (2002-01-31).
I did not succeed trying all the other available latex2html versions.
