Sorry Ross, but I'm afraid you're wrong this time (a rare event indeed!). The command \usecounter sets the value of the counter back to 0 again, so your suggestion won't work. See latex.ltx
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mark Wooding has macros \suspend and \resume to tackle this problem in his mdwlists package, I was just using a naive approach but some mechanism is necessary to remember the value from one list to the next.
