A solution is to use:
\bibitem{aa}
\bibitem{ab}
instead of \bibitem{}
it seems as L2H needs theese scalars (aa,ab) to hold the correct numbering
for each item (instead of the total), but this is not needed in Latex there
you can declare \bibitem{} ....is this a bug in L2H???
