I think an interesting question about the project page is this: If we had wiki / web-hosting, how would this page be different? I'm still chewing over the answer.
Great question. PyPI (a.k.a. the Cheeseshop) has both a project page, for downloading, etc. and an experimental documentation page to which you can upload a zip of your html files. It makes for much nicer presentation of your package's documentation, although the link to it is somewhat hidden.
If I had a project wiki, then I /think/ I'd want the canonical project page to point to that wiki, but I'd also want all the other information quickly available via app tabs. So I think the wiki is another tab up at the top.
