some microtests suggested that xml is slower than e.g. json/bson - and
certainly xml has the same issues with nonunicode strings as json
does; OTOH the frameworks for xmlrpc are pretty slick.

I would say - not /ruled out/ but not terribly appealing either (see
for instance the discussion poolie and I had on this list about it ~ a
month back).
