Launchpad is well rid of password management; getting rid of login.launchpad.net would be a step backwards, and also leave operating with other openid providers out in the cold. I agree that its a pain that the two systems are not well synchronised; I believe we have bugs on all aspects of that though, which will get fixed in time.
