Thank you, Guruprasad I will talk to the target team directly to see what the best approach would be. My problem with the https://gitlab.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/nm/libsmi is that it does not seem to be maintained at all, with last changes showing 5+ years ago. I can try this route, if that is preferred.

Afaik, it is unlikely that feature changes like this one will be directly accepted into Debian/Ubuntu and the best way to get it into these distributions will be via the upstream project. If you still insist on contributing this directly to Ubuntu, I would suggest getting in touch with the Ubuntu developers via the 'ubuntu-devel-discuss' mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-devel-discuss) or the #ubuntu-devel IRC channel on libera.chat.
