I have start a new project at launchpad.net/yawls which is translatable thru launchpad. It is at the moment a small java application without an GUI. It contains a cronjob and a init.d script (for an optional daemon) which adjust the brightness level of an notebook display by using an webcam as an ambient light sensor.
