Mainly because it's hard to predict exactly when a certain feature will land -- we only really know for sure if QA passes and the feature still works before that. I agree with you that the idea was not properly discussed on-list, so I'm happy to extend that grace period and have a conversation around the drawbacks of this change. The announcement may also have been unclear.
