There probably isn't a cheap way to do this. Even short stroke LVDTs are expensive, and they are spring loaded, so I would be concerned about them affecting your measurements. Depending on how familiar you are with IMAQ, that may be the way to go. You would have to do a calibration routine to get accurate measurements, and measure between 2 points. One would be fixed, and the other would be the piston or the column of mercury. Don't try to just measure a position on the screen.
