Currently LabVIEW does not internally support Unicode and there are no plans
for the immediate future. We are investigating how Unicode support would
fit into the way we treat strings on the panel, block diagram and file I/O.
Some of the problem that would need to be resolved is how to convert from
Unicode strings to "regular" strings, especially when the Unicode string
contains characters that are not in the default code page. Another problem
deals with the endianism of Unicode data (it may be stored in files starting
with either the MSB or LSB). Yet another issue involves platforms that
have no or only limited system level support for Unicode (Unix, Win 3.1,
MacOS). As Unicode use becomes more prevalent and demand for it increases I
imagine that suppoprt for it will appear in LabVIEW.
If you need Unicode support, please let NI know. We would also be grateful
to hear how you think it would make your life easier (data storage,
localization, etc.). We are also grateful for any suggestions you might
have on how we should tackle the problems addressed above.
