George, we use animatics smart motors here for our x-y tables. They have a built in motor controller and a serial interface. You can write a basic script and dowload it to the motor. The motor has I/O in the form of serial commands. We are able to use VISA read/writes within labview to communicate with it. Check it out at:

I am looking for a 1 or 2 axis stepper drive with integrated controller and RS232 or ethernet communication. The motors are fairly small (3 amps currently). The market seems saturated with stuff for the hobbiest, but I am looking for something a little more industrial and use out of the box. Anyone know of products like this?
