Hi Kathy,

It seems from my slight knowledge that Henry Lee Lucas was a ludicrous hoax,
that he succeeded only in killing his mother. The police were delighted to
clear their books and Lucas gloated over killings he never committed. Much
of the information on serial killers seems to be of the same dubious nature.

Hofmann, the mad Mormon bomber and forger, perhaps fails to meet the
criteria of a serial killer because the idiot blew himself up on his way to
more bombings but he had a very impressive list of intended victims. His
rearing has none of the earmarks of serial killers and his motives (greed
and then revenge) do not fit easily with the claimed motives of serial
killers. The same is true of Wayne Williams who seems to have killed young
blacks to improve the breed. And perhaps the most efficient and least
discovered serial killers are those who kill in nursing homes and hospitals.
The love of killing is seen in its starkest terms outside the prisons when
kooks celebrate executions of strangers.

Jack Olsen prints a study by a psychiatrist of Arthur Shawcross in "The
Misbegotten Son" that turns much of what is assumed about serial killers on
its head. His report was totally disregarded naturally because it was a
quite scholarly and dispassionate study. The usual hacks testified for the
defense and prosecution. There was a clear genetic, or at least physical,
implication in the very strange behaviour of Shawcross.
