January 26, 1998 -- Get your good-byes in now: This may be the swan song of
Intel's 66-MHz system bus. The first Deschutes processor, a 333-MHz
incarnation of the Pentium II announced in January, is likely to be the last
new high-powered desktop CPU to use a memory bus any slower than 100 MHz.
Manufactured on a 0.25 process, the chip has a higher core frequency and a
smaller die than its predecessors, but it is still subject to the more than
four-year-old bus bottleneck (which should be alleviated with subsequent
Deschutes designs later in the year). In the following pages, we review
eight inaugural 333-MHz systems: four so-called professional enthusiast PCs
with Microsoft Windows 95 and four managed corporate machines running
Windows NT 4.0.
Hi Joan, by fall you'll be able to pick up a 400-450Mhz system based on the
Deschutes processor, they will be on the 440Bx boards and will have either
512k or 1024k of Cache memory built in, couple this with a 100Mhz bus, 64Mb
Sdram and an average 10Gb HDrive then youll make me very jealous indeed, I
forgot to mention that the AGP port on the Bx is enhanced and significantly
faster than those in use now, your only real decision is what form of video
card you need, but by that time Ill have some more information for you.
Steve
