Sue Hartigan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA Escalating concerns over guns in schools have prompted Indianapolis public school officials to expand random searches of students to elementary school pupils. The new policy, announced Tuesday, follows three incidents this school year in which pupils were armed in school. "I find it sad that this is something we have to do now," said school board member Michael W. Rodman. School police will begin the random searches for weapons in elementary schools and on buses as early as next week. The school district has conducted similar searches of middle and high school students for seven years. Targeted schools will be chosen by lottery for searches every two or three days by police with metal detectors. School buses and pupils who walk to school will be searched as they arrive. Two 8-year-old pupils were arrested last month after carrying handguns to school. One said he carried the gun for protection, and the other allegedly pointed a gun at a classmate because she was teasing him. Earlier in the year, a third pupil was arrested with a gun. -- Two rules in life: 1. Don't tell people everything you know. 2.
