One of three juries in the murder case of Oscar-winning actor Haing Ngor
has reached a verdict, the judge said Thursday, but the decision was
kept secret while the two other panels continued to deliberate.

Three juries, one for each defendant, sat through the trial of three
street gang members and began separate deliberations last week.

Superior Court Judge J.D. Smith said he received word that the jury had
come to a conclusion regarding Jason Chan, the 20-year-old defendant
charged with firing the shots that killed Ngor in an alley outside his
apartment.

Smith sealed the verdict and sent the jury home to await word on when to
return and have the decision revealed in court.

Meanwhile, the jury for Tak Sun Tan, 21, spent a good part of the day in
court hearing readback of testimony from the trial. The panelists wanted
a repeat of police Detective Bert Luper's testimony concerning Tan's
statements during an interview.

On Wednesday, the jury for Indra Lim, 20, heard a repeat of testimony as
well. Lim's panel, which lost one juror who had to be replaced after he
refused to deliberate with the others, began its talks anew on Monday.

The Chan jury had been deliberating for seven days before coming to a
decision.

Ngor, 55, a doctor, came to the United States in 1980 and won the
Academy Award in 1984 for ``The Killing Fields.'' His acting drew on his
experiences as a survivor of torture in his native Cambodia.

When Ngor was slain, many speculated that he was a victim of political
retribution by the Khmer Rouge. But police said the killing was simply
one of many street crimes in a neighborhood infested with gangs.
