With the changing attitudes of the public concerning crime and
punishment, and the recent school schootings I doubt that they will
overturn this.  Simply because they don't want to lose votes in the
upcoming elections.

There is no legit reason for assult weapons.  And I doubt that congress
or anyone else would lose any sleep over the fact that they couldn't be
imported anymore.
