Pol Pot reportedly dies of heart attack at 69

     Wednesday, April 15, 1998 9:48PM EDT USA

BANGKOK, April 16 (Kyodo) - Former Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot,
who was allegedly responsible for the death of about two million
Cambodians during his control of the country in the 1970s,
reportedly died of a heart attack late Wednesday night, his close
aides said Thursday. He was 69.

Im Ngun, Khmer Rouge chief of staff, said his body is at Khmer
Rouge leader Ta Mok in Anlong Veng.

The Thai military have confirmed Pol Pot's death.

Under Pol Pot, people with an education or money were labeled an
enemy of the revolution and were executed, while many others
starved to death after being forced to work in fields under
     extremely severe conditions.

Cambodian King Sihanouk said recently he supports a U.S. plan to
have former Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot apprehended and tried for
genocide and crimes against humanity while he was in power
     between 1975 and 1979.

King Sihanouk called Pol Pot ''one of the most horrible monsters
     ever created by humanity.''

''He has committed countless, indescribable crimes against
humanity, his own country and his own people,'' the king said in
a faxed message from Beijing, where he has been undergoing
     medical treatment.

King Sihanouk, who lost five children and 14 grandchildren during
the Khmer Rouge regime, said Pol Pot should be ''judged and
condemned before an international court of justice for the deaths
of more than two million innocent people who perished in
     appalling conditions.''
