LONDON, April 19 (Reuters) - Sir Paul McCartney's wife Linda has died, a
statement from the
pop star's press office said.

Linda McCartney, 56, died in Santa Barbara, California on Friday, the
statement said. She had
been suffering from breast cancer which had spread to her liver, it
said.

The wife of the former Beatle had been on holiday inI Santa Barbara with
her husband, and died
there early on Friday, the statement said.

``The blessing was that the end came quickly and she didn't suffer,'' it
quoted an unnamed
spokesman for the family as saying. The spokesman said that just two
days before her death, Linda
McCartney had been horseriding with her husband.

Sir Paul will issue a statement later in the week, the spokesman said.
It said their children were with
him ``and the family is comforting each other.'' The McCartneys have
four children.
