Mother found guilty of killing infant

CINCINNATI, April 23 (UPI) A 24-year-old Cincinnati woman has become
the first
person to be convicted of aggravated murder under a new state law that
makes
the death penalty mandatory for killing anyone under the age of 13.

A Cincinnati jury deliberated for about three hours today before finding
Shawn
Heard guilty of the Nov. 4 death of her 19-day-old son, Brendan Walker.

Sentencing was scheduled for Monday.

Heard lawyer John Keller said during his closing argument the death
should have
been ruled involuntary manslaughter since it was brought about by
frustration
when Heard couldn't stop her child from crying.

He said Heard, described as ``developmentally handicapped'', was
overwhelmed
by being the mother of a newborn child.

She was accused of shaking, striking and strangling the infant so
viciously she
left fingernail marks in the child's neck.
