Report: Lewinsky Denied Immunity

> WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal judge has ruled that
> Monica Lewinsky does not have immunity from prosecution
> in the investigation into whether President Clinton had
> a sexual relationship with her and sought to cover it
> up, television networks reported Wednesday.
>
> The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Norma Holloway
> Johnson was under seal, but CBS, NBC and ABC all said
> on their evening news shows that they had learned of
> it.
>
> However, Ms. Lewinsky's chief lawyer said he has not
> been notified of any ruling on immunity.
>
> ``In response to the reports, could you please send me
> a copy of any order or opinion? I have not seen either,
> or been informed of the existence of an opinion,''
> William Ginsburg said in an interview.
>
> Ms. Lewinsky refused Wednesday evening to answer
> reporters' questions about any immunity decision. She
> and her stepmother drove up to her father's home in the
> Brentwood area of Los Angeles Wednesday evening and
> made no comment before walking inside.
>
> The court battle over whether prosecutors made a deal
> with Ginsburg for immunity for Ms. Lewinsky in the
> early days of the controversy has caused delays in the
> investigation. Whitewater independent counsel had
> awaited a judge's ruling to decide what action to take
> with the 24-year-old former White House intern.
>
> A ruling would free Starr's office to make another
> effort to secure her cooperation, to force her to
> testify before the grand jury with a grant of limited
> immunity, or to indict her. Ginsburg has said in the
> past his client has been informed she is someone likely
> to be indicted.
>
> Ginsburg had gone to court trying to enforce what he
> has said was a deal in late January with Starr in which
> his client would be given immunity for her testimony.
> Starr denied there was such a deal. Lawyers on both
> sides had argued the issue before Johnson.
>
> The immunity issue is one of several legal battles
> taking place behind closed doors. Among the others are
> efforts by Clinton administration to stop Secret
> Service agents from testifying and White House aides'
> refusal to answer certain questions on grounds of
> executive privilege.
>
> In the absence of Ms. Lewinsky's cooperation,
> prosecutors have brought numerous other witnesses
> before the grand jury seeking to learn if Ms. Lewinsky
> had sex with the president, and then lied about it
> under oath in the Paula Jones' case in exchange for
> help from Clinton friend Vernon Jordan in seeking a
> job.
