LOS ANGELES, March 17 (UPI) _ Susan McDougal, serving a Whitewater-
related prison term,
says her ex-husband Jim McDougal's last words to her were to cooperate
with independent counsel
Kenneth Starr. McDougal, speaking to NBC's ``Today'' from a Los Angeles
prison, said Jim
McDougal falsely accused President Clinton of wrongdoing and died ``with
a lie on his lips.''

McDougal just finished serving 18 months for refusing to testify before
Starr's grand jury, and she
has just begun a two-year sentence for a Whitewater conviction. She is
confined at the Federal
Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Jim McDougal was serving a Whitewater-related prison term when he died
of a heart attack.

Susan McDougal told NBC Jim McDougal had changed his story in exchange
for a shorter
sentence and had attempted to get her to cooperate with Starr.

She said, ``It's hard to think of a man that you cared about once dying
with a lie on his lips.''

She said the last time she spoke with her ex-husband, ``he said that he
never wanted to speak to me
again unless I would join him in cooperating with the independent
counsel. It's been hard knowing
that that'll be the last thing we ever said to each other.''

She also said her husband told her Starr deputy Hickman Ewing wanted her
to say she had had an
affair with President Clinton.

She told NBC, ``Jim came to me when he began to cooperate and he said,
''They want you to say
you had an affair with the president. That would make them happy.`` He
said, ''This Hickman Ewing
is foaming at the mouth to get any sort of evidence he can against
Clinton.``

Susan McDougal denied a relationship with Clinton.
