New Bid To Aid Domestic Violence Victims
A new campaign to protect women and children threatened with domestic
violence has been launched by Britain's leading children's charity.
The initiative comes after a survey by the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children found that one in five child abuse cases
dealt with by the charity involves domestic violence.

To launch its crackdown on domestic violence, the NSPCC has published
250,000 leaflets which include useful numbers and helplines for health
visitors, nurses and GPs to hand out to women and children at risk of abuse.

A phone line will also be run by the charity for anyone concerned about
children at risk from family abuse or women in a domestic violence
situation.

The launch of the campaign - which coincides with the NSPCC Children's Day -
has been warmly welcome from midwives and the children's helpline ChildLine.

Jim Harding, director and chief executive of the NSPCC, said: "Domestic
violence is something people are often aware of but ignore because it is
behind closed doors, between adults and in private.

"It is becoming increasingly apparent that we cannot continue to bury our
heads in the sand and ignore the fact that children living with domestic
violence are being harmed.

"We all have a duty to protect these children - we hope our campaign will
encourage people to take the necessary action."

The survey of the 1,767 child abuse cases dealt with by the charity reveals
that those in Wales and the Midlands are the most likely to involve domestic
abuse (32%), whereas cases in the South West were the least likely to
involve violence in the home (15%).

Welcoming the campaign, Karlene Davis, general secretary of the Royal
College of Midwives said: "Domestic abuse is a serious problem in our
society, affecting many thousands of women and their children. All health
professionals have a duty to take action sensitively but decisively, if they
suspect violence in the home."
