Specifying exactly what parts are slow could help us identify it. What is your PC's Specs? Ubuntu 8.1 is a newer OS by about 7 years to XP ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_xp), so it might have some underlying assumptions about your hardware.
It could be that you have a high-end graphics card, and don't have decent drivers.
