In most cases I use TAsyncProcess from the System tab. TAsyncProcess component must be dropped on the form then the process can be started easyly (for example in the .OnClick event handler of a TButton)
AsyncProcess1.CommandLine:='firefox http://lazarus-ide.org';
AsyncProcess1.Execute;
