In delphi it is possible to use now an edit box with enbedded left and right buttons. This can be done in Lazarus too. At least I found how to do this for win32 and gtk2. But since the main goal now is to fix bugs not to create new I'd better wait with this component implementation for some time.
Anyway, if you want you can always place the editbutton to the panel and fix the layout problems.
