For now, I would not use it with Lazarus. Use 2.4.4 or 2.6
I happily use this version:
"Free Pascal Compiler version 2.7.1 [2011/08/26] for i386"
It might be a very late "no-new-string" version.
AFAIK, using svn, you can rewind your FPC sources to 2011/08/26 (I don't
know the revision number).
