Are you by any chance using the Debian version of Mint? It's a few versions ago, but I had all kinds of weird problems with Lazarus/FPC/LMDE, and after a few iterations with the LMDE users, I switched to plain old Debian, and things have worked just fine since then. If you're using the Ubuntu-based Mint, then forget all the above, that used to work OK.
