The joys of package management and its dependency hell! To solve the

I agree, and the installation bundle includes a script which puts things
in a suitable place and generates an fpc.cfg which is almost always OK.
I can't speak for Mint but 2.6.4- as available at Sourceforge etc.- is
fine on any half-recent Debian (definitely "Lenny" onwards), and once
that's running you can compile later versions (e.g. the development
trunk) or if you really have to older ones.
