When I still used Windows, I *never* installed software from general download sites (eg: CNet, Softpedia, PCWorld etc). I *always* downloaded any Windows software directly from the maker's website. This at least reduced chances of adware, spyware etc. But now I only use FreeBSD and 99.9% of the software I use is all open source and compiled by myself.
