Is better to avoid desktop (or platform) specific
procedures, if a standard exists then use it. Besides
gnome 2.12  is standard compliant, at least so they
say:
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/en/rnadmins.html
for older versions there's a procedure published on a
previous post that keeps the standard.
