there is a libgnomeui, for example.

But the recent GTK development (in 2.x series) shows that there is much
movement towards having almost all GUI related things in GTK itself, and
to reduce the number of helper libraries. GNOME then only adds very
advanced things to GTK, such as Bonobo integration or configuration
management.
