Hi, Vincent!

Historically, Russian language has several codepages

866            -    for DOS
1251          -    for Windows
KOI8-R     -    for Unix
and also ISO (IBM) codepage (I do not remember it), and several MORE!!!

Actually all current Linux distributions support KOI8-R as a basic russian codepage and locale. Allmost all localized software can work with this locale and can display russian string resorses correctly. New way is to code russian letters as UTF8 - for example, in Fedora Core. But for now UTF8 as russian locale is quite buggy and allmost not finished jet - if you use it in Fedora Core - you can see some programms that will not work with this locale.

As for me - I use Mandriva Linux 2005 Limited Edition. It is installed standartly in a mean of locale - I only specify russian as a language - so all LOCALE settings are generated by system automatically. As I told you - Mandriva choose KOI8-R as default locale during installation process.

Best regards. Alexey.
