Hi, here is some info that can be usefull (for some it is trivial: sorry!):
if you type (linux):
uname -a
you get the kernel version but not the distribution release!
in fact this information is available:
/etc/mandriva-release
or
/etc/suse-release
will tell you what distribution it is
