Oh yeah! You are right... I forgot this aspect of the problem because
I coded all the db stuff manually using sql queries all the way. (It's
a lot of work, but I liked the control it gave over the whole thing.)

Indeed, some database formats are impossible to work with using
general programming tools (as others have mentioned). In that specific
case, maybe an sql based solution is the best approach... but that
would require hundreds of lines of code and couple more hours. I know
about that. :S
